According to Football London, Granit Xhaka is closing close on a deal from Arsenal to Roma.
In January, the Swiss international was heavily linked with a transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay at the Emirates Stadium.
The 28-year-old was one of Arsenal’s standout performers last season, appearing in 46 games in all competitions.
Arsenal supporters have been mostly apathetic to Xhaka since October 2019, when he made obscene gestures after a Premier League substitution against Crystal Palace.
Following the incident, Unai Emery, the club’s then-manager, stripped Xhaka of his captaincy.
He is presently pursuing a role in Jose Mourinho’s Roma project, which entails transforming the Serie A club into a title contender.
Xhaka, who is in the peak of his career, may bring a wealth of experience to Roma’s first squad.
Since joining Arsenal in 2016, he has made over 200 appearances in all competitions and has assisted the club in winning two FA Cups.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are aiming to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the start of the new season.
According to respected writer James Benge, they are interested in signing AC Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu.
They are also interested in re-signing Martin Odegaard, who joined the Emirates on loan from Real Madrid in the second part of last season.
