Barcelona have announced the free transfer of Memphis Depay, who left Lyon at the end of his contract.
The 27-year-contract old’s with the French club expires at the end of June, at which point he will be free to negotiate a transfer to another team. He had long been anticipated to join compatriot Ronald Koeman at Camp Nou, with the coach a big fan of the pacy striker.
And Barça announced through Twitter on Saturday evening that Memphis had finalized his transfer to Catalonia, signing a two-year contract with the Spanish giants.
“FC Barcelona and Memphis Depay have reached an agreement for the player to join the Club once his contract with Olympique Lyonnais is at an end,” the club said in a statement.
“The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.”
Depay becomes Barça’s fourth summer acquisition, following right-back Emerson and former Manchester City pair Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia to the Camp Nou.
It is not the first time the Catalan club has attempted to recruit Dutch forward Memphis, who seemed set to join in January – only for the deal to collapse.
However, la Blaugrana have finally apprehended their man, aiming to bolster their front line. Memphis shone for Lyon last season despite the fact that he was leaving the club at the conclusion of the season.
He completed the season with 20 goals and an amazing 12 assists in Ligue 1. His outstanding form has continued into Euro 2020, where he has already made his Euro 2020 debut for the Netherlands in Group C.
Memphis started the scoring for his nation in the tournament’s second round, converting a penalty in a 2-0 win against Austria.
He will meet up with countrymen Koeman and Frenkie de Jong after the conclusion of the European Championship.
Georginio Wijnaldum was also anticipated to be included to the list of new recruits, but has instead chosen to join Paris Saint-Germain.
