Everton want to sign Chris Smalling from AS Roma

AS Roma would pay a high price to get Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa this summer, writer Luke Hatfield told Football FanCast.

Luiz is being linked with a transfer to the Stadio Olimpico, with Roma reportedly interested in the 23-year-old.

According to the publication, Jose Mourinho wants to add Luiz to his team after the expiration of Manchester City’s buy-back option.

Midfield seems to be an area where the Portuguese manager is looking to improve at his new team. Along with Luiz, Roma are reportedly interested in Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka during this transfer season.

However, Hatfield has cautioned that the Giallorossi are not seeking for bargains with Luiz.

“I believe Villa regard him as a vital member of the team,” the Express & Star writer said. “It would take a substantial sum of money to entice him away.

“He’s significant to them. It will be very shocking to see him depart.”

The statistics corroborate the preceding. Luiz was critical last season in terms of ball retention.

According to WhoScored (10 starts minimum), no Villa midfielder averaged more passes per league game (42.9) or had a better pass success rate than the Brazilian (85.7).
