Bayern Munich are interested in signing Barcelona right-back Sergi Roberto on loan.
Die Roten are seeking to bolster their full-back options this summer, and after bringing in left-sided defender Omar Richards, they are now on the lookout for a new right-back.
Bayern have compiled a shortlist that includes Sergino Dest and Chelsea’s Emerson, but according to Goal, Roberto has emerged as their primary target after the club’s communication with Barcelona about a season-long loan transfer.
Roberto was believed to be on the brink of signing a new contract with Barcelona earlier this year, but an agreement could not be reached, and the Spaniard will now be out of contract next summer.
While a loan move for a player whose contract expires next summer may seem foolish from Barcelona – and let’s be honest, they’re not unfamiliar with it – it’s hoped that the positive relationship between the clubs following Philippe Coutinho’s loan move to Bayern Munich will result in an agreement on a fee.
The Blaugrana are eager to sell players in order to alleviate their continuing financial difficulties, and although a temporary move away for Roberto would not generate a transfer fee in the short term, it would relieve some of the burden on their eye-watering salary bill.
With Dest having had a year to adjust to life in Spain, Roberto may well be deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, with a move to the Allianz Arena a possibility.
