Everton have announced the acquisitions of Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic, who will become the club’s first signings under new manager Rafa Benitez.
Townsend joins after the expiration of his contract with Crystal Palace at the conclusion of last season. He appeared in all but two of the Eagles’ Premier League games last season, but scored only once.
Townsend told evertontv after the move’s confirmation on Tuesday: “I believe everyone is aware of what Everton is. It’s a big football club, it’s ambitious, and it’s been attempting to reclaim its rightful place in Europe and beyond. I’ll do all I can to assist the team in accomplishing that goal.
“Rafa is a seasoned professional. He works tirelessly on the tactical side of things on the training field, leaving no stone left. However, he is a wonderful guy, a fantastic man-manager, and he is always conversing with you. I’m certain he’ll thrive here.”
Townsend formerly played for Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. He spent the bulk of his career on loan with Ipswich Town, Birmingham City, and Queens Park Rangers throughout his time at Spurs. He signs a two-year deal at Goodison Park.
Begovic, meanwhile, has signed from AFC Bournemouth on a 12-month contract with the possibility of a one-year extension.
“When I initially heard about the opportunity to join Everton, I was ecstatic.
“Opportunities like this do not present themselves every day, and I am honored and delighted to be here.
The goal is to restore this club to its rightful place. We aim to compete for European places, for trophies, and for a place in the league’s top tier.
“With the squad we have, the fan base, and the tradition of the club, everything is in place for us to be successful.”
Begovic, 34, will almost certainly serve as a backup to England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with Robin Olsen returning to Roma after his loan stint.
