Sevilla are reportedly interested in Lyon defender Jason Denayer to replace Jules Kounde, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.
Denayer, who spent five years at Manchester City, never made an appearance for the clubs and spent time on loan at Celtic, Sunderland and Galatasaray before joining Lyon on a permanent deal in 2018.
He is out-of-contract in the summer and it doesn’t appear likely that the Belgian will sign a new deal with the French side.
Now, French outlet Le10Sport (via Get Football News France), are reporting that Sevilla are interested in bringing the 26-year-old to Spain and that deal could in turn allow Kounde to depart.
Kounde, a French defender, was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea last summer but the two clubs were unable to agree a deal.
It has been reported that the Blues would return for Kounde this summer but the ongoing ownership crisis could put a stop to that.
Manchester United and Liverpool are also thought to be interested in the 23-year-old.
Liverpool have rotated their four centre-backs this season but Joe Gomez has seen his game-time dramatically reduced from before his season ending injury last campaign.
This has lead to reports he could leave the club, with Aston Villa keen.
United’s defensive struggles have been widely documented this season, with summer signing Raphael Varane struggling with a number of injury problems.
Captain Harry Maguire has also struggled this season with a number of high-profile mistakes and reports of off-field discontent with his leadership.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly aren’t seen as long-term solutions so a move for Kounde could be in the offing and Denayer could help that.
On Maguire, his former Hull City teammate Ahmed Elmohamady has admitted he doesn’t believe he has the credentials to be United captain.
Speaking to beIN Sports, Elmohamady said: “Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the Manchester United captain.
“Man Utd need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays.
“Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure; however, Maguire can’t handle this pressure.
“So I think that the pressure he has by wearing the captain’s armband is affecting his performances.
“Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League and maybe this is his level.
“He doesn’t have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England.”
