Ten Hag responds to Ratcliffe: Man Utd manager’s message demands attention

COMMENT: In a recent interview with Gary Neville, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sent a clear message to the pundits and also reminded his new bosses at the club about the need for continued progress. The interview was refreshingly honest, with Ten Hag discussing missed opportunities in the transfer market, such as failing to sign Harry Kane and Frenkie de Jong. He emphasized the importance of shopping at a high level to meet supporter expectations.

While the transfer talk grabbed headlines, what was equally intriguing was Ten Hag’s emphasis on the cultural shift that has taken place at the club since he took charge two years ago. According to Tribalfootball.com’s transfer expert Rudy Galetti, this shift is part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos’ determination to break away from the past. Ratcliffe wants his version of United to move beyond the era of previous players, staff, and managers. This explains the management changes surrounding Ten Hag and the rumors of major player clearouts.

However, as Ten Hag pointed out in his interview with Neville, significant changes have already been made at the club over the past two years. Problematic players have been let go, smarter decisions are being made in the transfer market, and the youth system has been transformed under Ten Hag’s watch. The Dutchman highlighted the game model that has been implemented and how it has allowed young talents like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to make their way into the first team.

Credit must also be given to John Murtough and Richard Arnold for their role in revitalizing the club’s academy production. The changes made within the senior locker room have also played a crucial role in creating a positive environment for young players to thrive. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Rapha Varane have been instrumental in supporting and guiding the younger generation.

Despite facing injuries and frequent changes in the back four, Ten Hag commended his team’s spirit and determination to go for victory in every game. The injuries have undoubtedly affected United’s consistency this season, but they should not be used as an excuse. Last season, when the team had a settled XI, their potential was evident until Lisandro Martinez’s injury. This is the progress that Ratcliffe should recognize and appreciate.

While there is always room for improvement, talk of mass clearouts and transfer-listing all players does more harm than good. It is disappointing that no one connected to Ratcliffe has pushed back on these stories, as it reflects poorly on the club’s media relations. The recent reports suggesting that Fernandes could be among the players considered for transfer this summer prompted a response from the player himself, highlighting the need for both parties to want him to stay.

It is absurd that the club captain and best performer has to address such rumors. Both Ten Hag and Fernandes have been positive forces for United since their arrivals, and the club is undeniably changing for the better. There is no need for Ratcliffe to dismantle everything and start from scratch. The progress made over the past two years should be acknowledged and built upon.
