Manchester City midfielder Rico Lewis has opened up about the intense training sessions under manager Pep Guardiola. According to Lewis, the training is always done in fifth gear, surpassing the expectations of outsiders.
“It is intense. It’s probably ten times more intense than anyone from the outside thinks,” Lewis revealed in an interview with BBC Sport.
Lewis further explained that Guardiola’s intensity stems from his hard work and obsession with winning. The manager has a track record of success, having triumphed everywhere he has been. However, at Manchester City, even two consecutive league titles were not enough, and the hunger for more remains.
“Two league titles in a row was not enough, three in a row is not enough, four will not be enough. Next season he always wants more anyway,” Lewis added.
Another player who has emerged from Manchester City’s academy is Phil Foden, who has had a remarkable season with 24 goals and eleven assists in 49 games. Lewis considers Foden a role model and believes he is the best player to have come from the academy to the senior squad.
“He has experienced everything for me, and he is the best player to come from the academy up to the senior squad,” Lewis stated, emphasizing Foden’s influence on his own development. “So there is really no one I should listen to more when it comes to getting into the team.”
The dedication and drive exhibited by Guardiola and Foden serve as inspiration for Lewis and highlight the high standards set at Manchester City. The club’s relentless pursuit of success ensures that complacency is never an option.
