Stephen Warnock’s exclusive thoughts on Villa, Emery, and questioning Liverpool.

The atmosphere at Villa Park on Tuesday night was undeniably jubilant as they celebrated their annual Club Awards. The defeat of Spurs also confirmed Villa’s participation in the Champions League next season, thanks to their fourth-place finish.

“I think Unai Emery has done an incredible job. To lose Tyrone Mings, Emile Buendia early on, and then Kamara throughout the season, and still have a smaller squad to compete in European football and reach the semi-finals in the Conference League. It just shows how tactically astute Unai Emery is,” former Villa player Stephen Warnock praised the Spanish maestro in an exclusive interview with Tribalfootball.

Warnock emphasized the impact Emery has had on Villa’s success since taking over when the club was three points away from relegation.

“What we often overlook is his ability to keep the squad happy and motivated during tough times. His man-management skills are remarkable. He keeps the players on their toes. It was fascinating to see how he operates up close when we went to America last summer,” said Warnock.

“We were fortunate enough to witness Unai Emery’s work firsthand and speak to some of the players. What stood out was that he maintains a certain distance from them, earning their immense respect, but they never quite know what to expect from him.”

“Even little things like a day off; you have to work hard to earn it, and when you finally get it, you know he has put thought into why he granted it. There’s a purpose behind everything he does. He doesn’t cater to every player’s whim. He wants to ensure they remain hungry for success.”

“I believe the players have tremendous respect for him because they know they are improving under his guidance. When a manager comes in and not only enhances your tactical abilities but also sets individual targets for you to achieve, that’s the perfect balance. You can clearly see the players hold massive respect for him,” added Warnock, who singled out Ollie Watkins as Villa’s standout player this season.

“He has been outstanding in terms of goal returns. Considering how many times he has had to adapt to different strike partners like Diaby, John McGinn, Leon Bailey, etc., it demonstrates his quality and progress as a player,” praised Warnock, also giving credit to Douglas Luiz.

“Luiz’s ability to control the midfield in Emery’s system showcases his quality. However, we’ve noticed that he performs even better when Kamara is alongside him. I think Emery will look to strengthen the midfield area.”

Luiz once again commanded the midfield in a peculiar game against Liverpool on Monday night. While it had its entertaining moments, both teams made numerous mistakes. According to Warnock, fatigue played a significant role.

“Mistakes are a result of fatigue. The quality of games tends to decline towards the end of the season. Liverpool has been fighting for the league, and Villa has been fighting for a position they probably didn’t expect to achieve at the season’s start.”

“Both teams have faced setbacks with injuries and other challenges. From Liverpool’s perspective, their game management was poor. We have seen this throughout the season. They are falling behind in too many games,” said Warnock, who spent five years with Liverpool before joining Blackburn and later Aston Villa.

“When you consider going ahead at Old Trafford and not being able to see the game out, it turns into a basketball match. That’s not the Liverpool that won the Champions League. That’s not the team that knew how to close out a game.”

Preventing those mistakes will soon be Arne Slot’s responsibility, while Unai Emery can begin preparing Aston Villa for the Champions League. Could he be named Manager of the Season? He has certainly made a strong case for himself.
