Lloris claims Postecoglou sidelined him at Tottenham

LAFC shot-stopper Hugo Lloris has opened up about his decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur, shedding light on the circumstances that led to his departure.

The former Spurs captain made the move to Los Angeles midway through last season, and in an interview with Le Parisien, he explained the factors that influenced his exit. Lloris stated, “It was a combination of several factors: the team was struggling to achieve results, and coach Antonio Conte was under immense pressure and losing patience. As a result, the group dynamic became negative.”

Lloris further revealed that both he and Tottenham were reaching the end of a cycle. The club was looking to recruit younger players, particularly in his position, and he was no longer part of their plans. The French goalkeeper recalled, “When the championship resumed in August 2023, coach Postecoglou informed me that I would no longer be playing and would only be a training player. I felt sidelined and had become invisible.”

The eight months without playing were challenging for Lloris. He admitted, “Throughout my football career, which began at the age of six, I have always focused on the upcoming matches and set goals for myself. When all of that suddenly collapses, it becomes difficult to find meaning in physical exertion. Why should we push ourselves if we’re no longer part of the game?”

However, Lloris found solace in the extra time he got to spend with his family during this period. He said, “I took advantage of the opportunity to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday and watch my brother play against PSG in Le Havre. These experiences would have been impossible if I had still been on Tottenham’s team sheet.”

Looking ahead, Lloris acknowledged that one day football will come to an end for him. While he may miss the adrenaline rush that the sport provides, he expressed no fear of this “little death,” as it is often referred to in the sporting world. Lloris eagerly anticipates the afterlife beyond football, stating, “There is an afterlife, and I can’t wait to explore it.”

In conclusion, Lloris’ departure from Tottenham was driven by a combination of factors, including the team’s poor results, pressure on the coach, and his own realization that he was no longer part of the club’s plans. Despite the challenges he faced during his time away from the game, Lloris found comfort in spending quality time with his loved ones. As he looks towards the future, the French goalkeeper embraces the idea of life beyond football.
