Enzo Fernandez has opened up about his challenging start at Stamford Bridge, but has dismissed the notion that his record-breaking price tag played a role in his early struggles at Chelsea. The Argentine midfielder became the most expensive player in Premier League history when he joined the Blues from Benfica in a reported £106.8 million deal on deadline day in January 2023.
After an impressive first six months at Chelsea, Fernandez encountered difficulties in his first full season, missing 10 games due to a hernia issue that required surgery. Now under his third permanent manager at the club, Fernandez admitted that he was not satisfied with his performances during the initial period.
“When I arrived, it was very difficult, especially in the first year and a half here: changing coaches, the club’s poor form, personal injuries,” Fernandez told ESPN. “But it didn’t affect me. I took it upon myself to enjoy the game without pressure. I wasn’t happy with my performances, and then I got injured. Many things happened. But today, I feel really good, as does the team, and we hope to continue on this path.”
Since the arrival of Enzo Maresca as manager, Fernandez has undergone a remarkable transformation, contributing three goals and four assists in his last seven Premier League appearances. In fact, only Cole Palmer has created more chances for Chelsea this season than Fernandez, who has also won an impressive 67 duels.
Chelsea are currently unbeaten in their last nine Premier League matches and Fernandez has played a pivotal role in their success in the Europa Conference League, providing three assists in just two games. The 23-year-old midfielder attributed his improved performance to Maresca’s guidance and believes that Chelsea can achieve great things under the Italian manager.
“I’ve learned my position and understood what the coach wants from me,” Fernandez explained. “Over time, I grasped the concept and started reading the game better. Personally, I feel great. The team has shown immense character, always working with humility and proving that we can achieve great things. However, there is still a long way to go.”
With Fernandez hitting top form and Chelsea’s unbeaten streak continuing, the Blues will be hoping to secure their first Premier League title since the 2016-17 season. Under the guidance of Maresca, the team appears to be on the right track, and Fernandez’s resurgence is a testament to the positive impact of the new manager.
