In a stunning turn of events, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has clinched the Premier League Player of the Month award for the second time in his career, following his exceptional performances in December. The Leeds United striker netted an impressive six goals in just five matches during the festive period, propelling his team to victories over the likes of Chelsea and Crystal Palace while maintaining an unbeaten streak throughout the month.
Calvert-Lewin’s achievement is made even more remarkable by the fact that he is the first player from a newly promoted club to secure the Player of the Month award since Teemu Pukki back in August 2019, during Daniel Farke’s tenure at Norwich City. This isn’t the first time the English forward has tasted success with this accolade, having previously won it in September 2020 while playing for Everton and scoring five goals in just three appearances.
Interestingly, Calvert-Lewin’s gap between awards is one for the history books, as it is the longest period of time between two Player of the Month wins for a player who has been consistently competing in the Premier League since Robbie Keane achieved a similar feat back in 2001 and 2007.
On the managerial front, Unai Emery has also been recognized for his outstanding efforts in December by being named the Premier League Manager of the Month. Aston Villa’s impressive run of five wins out of six matches last month, including victories over Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, solidified their position in the league standings under Emery’s guidance.
This marks Emery’s third time receiving the Manager of the Month award, with previous wins in April and December 2023. He joins a select group of Villa managers who have claimed this honor, with only Martin O’Neill surpassing him with four awards to his name.
