China loses 0-2 to Australia, nearing World Cup qualification.

Australia boosted their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over China on Tuesday. Despite some nervy moments in the second half, first-half goals from Jackson Irvine and Nishan Velupillay secured the crucial three points for the Socceroos.

The match got off to a promising start for Australia, as they almost took an early lead when Brandon Borrello’s cross caused chaos in the Chinese defense. However, Martin Boyle failed to capitalize on the opportunity, volleying wide from close range.

Irvine, though, made no mistake in the 16th minute. After his initial shot was blocked, he showed great composure to round the defender and curl a beautiful strike into the far corner of the net.

Australia continued to dominate proceedings and found their second goal through Velupillay. Taking advantage of China’s defensive frailties, his shot from just inside the box bounced through the hands of goalkeeper Wang Delai and crossed the line.

China showed signs of improvement in the second half, with debutant Serginho causing problems for the Australian defense. His powerful shot seemed destined for the top corner, but an acrobatic save from Mat Ryan denied him a goal.

Milos Degenek had a golden opportunity to extend Australia’s lead in the 61st minute but could only guide his header into the side netting from a corner.

Despite China’s improved performance, they were unable to find a breakthrough and remain in sixth place in Group C. Australia, on the other hand, climbed to second place with 13 points, trailing leaders Japan by seven points after their goalless draw with Saudi Arabia.

This victory could prove crucial for Australia’s World Cup aspirations. They have now gone undefeated in their last 25 away World Cup qualifying matches when leading at halftime, winning 19 and drawing 5.

The Socceroos’ defensive solidity was evident in this match, as they only allowed one shot on target. The last time they conceded fewer shots in an AFC World Cup Qualifier away from home was in June 2024 against Bangladesh.

Irvine’s goal against China marked his second consecutive match with a goal for Australia. He had previously scored twice against Indonesia and also found the back of the net in back-to-back games for the Socceroos in January 2024 against India and Syria.

Overall, it was a professional performance from the Socceroos, who will be pleased with their job well done against China.
