Roma’s success in the upcoming season is heavily reliant on their attacking prowess, according to Gian Piero Gasperini. Under Claudio Ranieri’s guidance last season, Roma only lost once in the league from January onwards, securing Europa League football for the upcoming campaign.
Gasperini, who previously spent nine years with Atalanta, has made a successful start with Roma. The team has won all three of their pre-season games, scoring six goals without conceding.
The 67-year-old coach is pleased with the team’s progress but has emphasized the importance of strengthening their attack for the new season. Gasperini stated, “A lot will depend on how strong we are in attack, and that can determine the strength of the squad. The biggest investments are made on forwards, and teams with the best strikers are the most competitive.”
Currently, Paulo Dybala is in the final stages of his recovery from injury, while Artem Dovbyk has faced challenges since his move from Girona last season. Dovbyk scored 12 goals in 32 Serie A matches in 2024-25, slightly below his expected goals (xG) of 12.25. Gasperini is working on improving Dovbyk’s ability to integrate into the team’s style of play.
“Dybala is undergoing personalized training but we hope he can return to full squad training next week,” Gasperini mentioned. “Dovbyk was a significant investment and has shown his value as a center-forward. We are working on enhancing his ability to connect with the team and timing his movements correctly.”
In conclusion, Gasperini’s focus on Roma’s attacking strength highlights the importance of a potent forward line for success in the upcoming season.
