English football icon Kevin Keegan, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, is facing a battle with cancer and is set to undergo surgery. The news was revealed by his family after doctors discovered the illness during a routine hospital check-up for “abdominal symptoms.”
Keegan, who began his illustrious career at Scunthorpe United in 1968, went on to make 230 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 68 goals and clinching three league titles, a European Cup, and two UEFA Cups during his time at Anfield. After his successful spell with Liverpool, Keegan played for Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle United before retiring at Blacktown City.
During his stint at Hamburg, Keegan secured a Bundesliga title and reached a European Cup final. His exceptional performances on the pitch earned him the prestigious Ballon d’Or award twice, in 1978 and 1979. As a manager, Keegan led Newcastle to Premier League glory in 1993 and also had spells at Fulham, Manchester City, and a brief tenure with the England national team.
The Keegan family expressed their gratitude towards the medical team for their care and intervention during this challenging time. They have requested privacy and will not be making any further comments on the matter. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin Keegan as he faces this health battle.
