Chelsea’s Pedro Neto believes the team has the winning mentality needed to secure trophies following their 3-1 victory over Cardiff City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals. Neto, along with Alejandro Garnacho who scored twice, came off the bench to seal the win for Chelsea after David Turnbull had equalized following an opening goal from the Argentinian.
Chelsea’s win marked their sixth consecutive victory over Cardiff and their 19th progression from EFL Cup ties against lower division teams. Despite the comfortable outcome, Chelsea struggled in the first half after Enzo Maresca made 11 changes to the lineup from their previous match against Everton.
The introduction of Garnacho and Joao Pedro at halftime turned the game around, with Neto also making an immediate impact. Neto praised Chelsea’s resilience as they secured a spot in their third semi-final under Maresca, aiming to clinch their first domestic trophy since the 2018 FA Cup.
Cardiff put up a good fight, outshooting Chelsea in the first half, but failed to maintain their momentum after the break. Turnbull’s goal against the run of play was not enough as Garnacho added two more goals for Chelsea.
Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy commended his players for their effort and the support from the fans, despite the loss. He acknowledged the team’s strong start and expressed pride in their performance.
Neto emphasized Chelsea’s desire to win trophies, highlighting their winning mindset and determination to succeed in all competitions. The victory over Cardiff has set Chelsea on track for further success as they continue their pursuit of silverware.
