Getafe coach Jose Bordalas has launched a scathing attack on referee Jorge Figueroa Valdez following his side’s defeat to Alaves. Bordalas was left seething with Figueroa Valdez’s performance and expressed his frustration at the referee’s actions.
“The referee slammed the door at the end of the game,” Bordalas said. “He said ‘I’m sick and tired of putting up with this team’. Imagine if any player or coach had said that. They would have been sanctioned. Now there is no sanction for the referees? It’s something we can’t understand. He says he’s fed up with this team. This always happens to us with this referee, it doesn’t happen with any other.”
In addition to his criticism of Figueroa Valdez, Bordalas also questioned the application of the anti-violence protocol by the referee in response to insults directed at Mason Greenwood by some of the Mendizorroza fans.
“There was a very important detail,” Bordalas explained. “They sang ‘Greenwood die’. The protocol states that when this happens a second time, the game must be stopped and the players must go to the locker room. It hasn’t been done, and if the referees themselves don’t comply with the protocol, insults and racism will never end. This makes us all so angry.”
Bordalas’ frustration with Figueroa Valdez’s performance and the failure to enforce the anti-violence protocol highlights the ongoing issues within football regarding referee decisions and fan behavior. The coach’s comments reflect the growing concern among many in the sport, and it remains to be seen whether action will be taken to address these concerns.
