Pochettino departs Chelsea under Boehly

The Premier League world has been left in shock just two days after the conclusion of the season, as Chelsea’s head coach has dramatically quit the club by mutual consent. Owned by Todd Boehly, Chelsea’s sudden departure comes less than a year into the job.

The decision was made after the 52-year-old met with the club’s sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, as well as co-owner Behdad Eghbali, for two days of discussions. Despite making it to the final of the 2023/24 EFL Cup, they ultimately decided to part ways.

This surprising development comes after a strong end to Chelsea’s Premier League campaign and their qualification for European football next season. Depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final on May 25, they will either compete in the UEFA Europa League if Manchester City win, or the UEFA Conference League if they do not.

In a press release, Mauricio Pochettino expressed his gratitude to the Chelsea ownership group and Sporting Directors for the opportunity to be part of the club’s history. He believes that the club is well positioned to continue moving forward in both the Premier League and Europe in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Winstanley and Stewart thanked Pochettino for his service during the season and stated that he would always be welcome back at Stamford Bridge. They wished him all the best in his future coaching career.

The big question now is who will replace Pochettino as Chelsea’s head coach. He becomes the third manager to leave under Boehly’s ownership, following Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. Interim bosses such as Bruno Saltor and Frank Lampard have also tried their hand at managing the Stamford Bridge team.

Since Boehly purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, a total of five coaches have managed Chelsea. According to The Telegraph, potential candidates to replace Pochettino include Sebastian Hoeness of VfB Stuttgart, Michel of Girona, Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town, and Enzo Maresca of Leicester City, who is a disciple of Pep Guardiola.

There is even speculation that Tuchel himself might return to Chelsea shortly after being dismissed by Bayern Munich. The 50-year-old previously won the UEFA Champions League with the club in 2021.
