Sepp van den Berg has expressed his frustration with Liverpool management as he prepares to leave the club this summer. The Dutch defender, who spent a year on loan at Mainz, is disappointed with the club’s insistence on selling him for £20m or more.
In an interview with De Telegraaf, van den Berg revealed his dissatisfaction with the lack of opportunities he received at Liverpool. He described the challenges he faced in training against the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mo Salah, but felt that he wasn’t given the support he needed.
“I felt ‘ready’ in 2021,” van den Berg said. “I had a good conversation with the management and they said they had received positive reports about me. However, I understood that I wouldn’t be able to displace Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip, or Ibrahima Konate from the starting lineup. But I believed I could be right behind them.”
When he didn’t get the chance he was hoping for, van den Berg made it clear that he wanted to leave. He criticized Liverpool for not showing confidence in him while also hindering his future prospects.
“I want to continue playing every week and further develop myself,” van den Berg stated. “In Germany, I enjoy playing against top clubs like Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, and Leverkusen. These matches challenge me every week.”
Van den Berg’s comments highlight his desire for regular playing time and his eagerness to continue his development elsewhere. As he prepares to leave Liverpool, it remains to be seen where his future lies.
