Lobjanidze misses late chance as Georgia draws with Czechia

Georgia and Czechia are locked in a fierce battle to secure a spot in the last 16 of Group F, with their recent 1-1 draw in Hamburg adding to the drama. The match saw Saba Lobjanidze miss a golden opportunity late in the game, leaving both teams on edge.

Patrik Schick, who shared the Golden Boot with Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2020, managed to level the score in the second half, cancelling out Georges Mikautadze’s penalty goal for Georgia. The penalty was awarded just before half-time after Robin Hranac was found to have handled the ball in Czechia’s area following a VAR check.

Earlier in the game, Czechia had a goal disallowed by VAR as the ball had struck Adam Hlozek’s arm on its way in. However, Schick had no such trouble when he bundled the ball into the net in the 59th minute. Unfortunately for Czechia, Schick had to leave the field due to injury shortly after scoring.

With the game nearing its end, Georgia had a chance to secure a surprising victory when they broke through on goal. However, Lobjanidze failed to convert the one-on-one opportunity, firing over the bar with the final kick of the game. It would have been a remarkable result for the tournament debutants.

Now, Georgia must focus on their upcoming match against Portugal if they want to keep their hopes of advancing alive. A victory against Portugal is crucial for their chances of making it to the knockout stage.

In other news, Schick’s impressive performance at the Euros continues to make headlines. The Bayer Leverkusen striker has now scored six goals across the last two tournaments, surpassing Ronaldo and Harry Kane, who have both scored five goals. Schick also holds the second-best goals per minute ratio (0.86) in Euros history among players who have played at least five times in the competition, with only Michel Platini (1.8) ahead of him.

Schick’s goal-scoring prowess has been a key factor in Czechia’s campaign, and his contributions will be crucial as they aim to progress further in the tournament.
