Is Slot’s Liverpool the best team in the world?

Liverpool: Back with a Vengeance

A couple of years ago, Liverpool struck fear into the hearts of their opponents. Jurgen Klopp’s well-oiled machine dominated with their vertical play, solid defense, and voraciousness in front of goal. They were the best, proving it week after week. However, as the seasons passed, they lost their power, repeatedly falling to Manchester City in the Premier League and falling short in the Champions League. Last season, they even missed out on Europe’s top competition. But now, they are back and ready to make a statement. With Klopp at the helm and a renewed philosophy, they have regained their reputation as a team no one wants to face. And their next Champions League opponents? Real Madrid.

There were doubts about the arrival of the Dutch coach to Anfield, but as the weeks go by, it is clear that it has been a resounding success. They are currently leading the English League and topped their group in the Champions League. There are few complaints to be made about a team that aspires to everything and is arguably the best in the world today.

In their recent match against Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool once again showcased their greatest strengths. Despite Alisson’s injury, their defense remains solid. Tsimikas on the left has joined forces with Van Dijk and Konate to create a formidable backline. Their style of play is reminiscent of another European powerhouse, Barcelona. They press high and aggressively to win back possession in the opposition’s half. It may seem easy to exploit their high defensive line, but no one has been able to do so. There must be a reason for that.

One notable difference from Klopp’s time is in midfield. Slot has resurrected Gravenberch, who was once considered one of the most promising midfielders in the world. After a stint at Bayern Munich and a lackluster first season in England, he is now shining brightly. Gravenberch is a box-to-box midfielder who excels at both destroying and building play. His dribbling and physicality allow him to break through lines and impose his presence on the pitch.

Alongside Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister has taken on a leadership role in the team. The Argentine, who impressed at the World Cup in Qatar, continues to perform at a high level. He orchestrates the team’s movements and sets the tempo of their play. To complete the midfield, Curtis Jones and Szoboszlai offer different qualities depending on the opponent. Jones brings physicality, while Szoboszlai adds attacking prowess. Both are top-level options to support the attack from deeper positions. However, the real fear comes from Liverpool’s front line.

Liverpool’s attack is a force to be reckoned with. They have scored 19 goals in the Premier League and 10 in the Champions League, making them a goal-scoring machine. Mohammed Salah, in particular, has returned to his prime form. Defenses tremble when he receives the ball on the right flank. While he may not be the same goal-scoring machine as in 2018, Salah has evolved into a luxury playmaker without losing his edge in front of goal. He has become the beacon of this Liverpool side, much like Lionel Messi was for Barcelona.

But Salah is not alone. Luis Diaz has also been in exceptional form. The Colombian winger utilizes his speed and dribbling skills to create scoring opportunities from either the left or center of the pitch. He has added a repertoire of exquisite finishes to his game, resulting in nine goals in just 15 games. Diaz has transformed from a great supporting player to a potential leader of this formidable team.

What sets Liverpool apart is their squad depth. Cody Gakpo has been impressive as a starter in recent games, showcasing the same brilliance he displayed while representing the Netherlands. And there are even more options on the bench, such as the ever-reliable Diogo Jota and the powerful Darwin Nunez. Federico Chiesa, who arrived from Juventus with a point to prove, is also waiting for his chance to shine.

After a period of darkness, the sun is shining brightly at Anfield. Everything is going Liverpool’s way, and joy fills the air. Football can be unpredictable, but it seems unlikely that any team will be able to stand up to this Liverpool side, who have returned to their best after a couple of challenging years. They never walk alone, and now more than ever, they are a force to be reckoned with.
