In a shocking incident, Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, who has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, was attacked with acid by a woman who broke into his home and attempted to kidnap his newborn daughter. The incident took place on July 2, 2021.
Fortunately, Wissa’s quick reaction prevented his daughter from being taken away, and both of them escaped without any loss of sight. However, the Congolese international suffered serious facial injuries and had to undergo surgery to avoid any long-term damage.
The trial for this horrifying incident began at the Tribunal de Asuntos de la Morbihan in Vannes, France. It is expected to last for four days as the court passes judgment on the attacker. Wissa’s lawyer emphasized that he is still dealing with the aftermath of the attempted kidnapping and attack.
Wissa’s lawyer stated, “Yoane Wissa is still suffering the after-effects of this attempted kidnapping and attack. He has been working hard to prove that he is fine and is doing his best in his day-to-day job. Thankfully, he and his wife feel safe in England now and believe they are protected from any danger.”
The woman on trial, identified as Laetitia P., not only threw acid at Wissa but also attempted to set fire to another woman while claiming to hear “inner voices.” She now faces charges of attempted murder, child abduction, and attempted kidnapping, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
During the trial, the defendant apologized to Wissa, saying, “I’m sorry for what I’ve done to you, I’m deeply sorry.”
Despite the traumatic incident, Wissa’s performance on the field has been exceptional. His numbers in the Premier League make him one of the most sought-after strikers in the league. Brentford signed him from Lorient for around 10 million euros in 2021.
In the current season, Wissa has scored an impressive 12 goals and provided two assists in 23 games for Brentford. His outstanding form has attracted the interest of clubs like Nottingham Forest.
The incident has left a lasting impact on Wissa, but he remains determined to overcome the challenges and continue excelling in his football career.
