Liverpool narrowly beat Wolves 2-1: Key talking points

Liverpool took another step towards winning the Premier League title this season with a victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday. Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 15th minute, and Mohamed Salah doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 37th minute. Matheus Cunha pulled one back for Wolves with a stunning strike in the 67th minute, but they couldn’t find an equalizer and Liverpool held on for the win.

Liverpool were missing Joe Gomez, who is out with a long-term injury, as well as Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones due to minor knocks. Arne Slot was able to lead his team from the dugout despite awaiting the outcome of disciplinary proceedings following his red card against Everton.

Liverpool lined up with Alisson Becker in goal, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in central defense, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson as full-backs. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister played in midfield, with Dominik Szoboszali further forward. Diogo Jota had Salah and Diaz alongside him in attack.

Wolves were without several key players due to injury, including Hwang Hee-chan, Sasa Kalajdzic, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Leon Chiwome, Enso Gonzalez, and Yerson Mosquera. Jose Sa started in goal, with Toty Gomes, Agbadou, and Matt Doherty in defense. Andre and Joao Gomes formed the midfield partnership, while Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nelson Semedo played as wing-backs. Cunha and Pablo Sarabia supported Goncalo Guedes in attack.

Liverpool started strongly and almost took the lead early on through Jota’s volley. They eventually broke the deadlock when Diaz scored from a deflected Salah cross. Diaz was involved again as he won a penalty, which Salah converted to double Liverpool’s lead. Wolves pulled one back through Cunha’s brilliant strike from outside the box.

Wolves made attacking changes at halftime, bringing on Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde. Munetsi had a great chance to equalize but was denied by a save from Alisson. Liverpool thought they had a chance to extend their lead from the penalty spot, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review. Wolves continued to push for an equalizer but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Liverpool secured an important win, but their performance in the second half was not up to their usual standards. They will need to improve if they want to maintain their lead in the title race. Wolves, on the other hand, can take positives from their performance and will look to build on it for the rest of the season.

Liverpool face tough fixtures against Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle in February. They will need to find their form quickly to stay ahead in the title race. Wolves have two matches against Bournemouth coming up and will be looking to pick up points to move away from the relegation zone.
