Amorim laments Man Utd’s “soft” performance despite second-half comeback.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was left disappointed with his team’s performance in their 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday. The Red Devils found themselves two goals down at halftime after a lackluster display, with Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure finding the back of the net. However, a brilliant free-kick from Bruno Fernandes and a superb strike from Manuel Ugarte helped United salvage a point.

Amorim expressed his frustration, stating, “We need to win three points and we need to win the whole game. The worst part is that we are losing the ball without pressure and we are not doing what we need to do. We were soft.” He emphasized the need for improvement in creating chances and scoring goals.

Despite an improved second-half performance, United had a nervy moment towards the end when referee Andrew Madley initially awarded a penalty to Everton after Ashley Young appeared to be fouled in the box. However, the decision was overturned after VAR consultation. Amorim believed that the right call was made, questioning the severity of the offense.

United captain Bruno Fernandes agreed with Amorim’s assessment, acknowledging the team’s slow starts. He said, “We had our chances in the second half but the problem is we started the game too late. We gave it away in the first half. We were too static and it was difficult to create some situations. We need to start the games better.”

Fernandes played a crucial role in United’s comeback and has been involved in more Premier League goals against Everton than any other side. However, he stressed that the team should never have found themselves in that situation in the first place.

On the other hand, Everton manager David Moyes was pleased with his team’s performance and the point earned but expressed disappointment that they couldn’t secure all three points. He praised his players for their display and felt that the momentum shifted after United’s free-kick goal.

Moyes also mentioned missed opportunities to extend their lead when they were 2-0 up. Regarding the penalty incident, he was surprised at the decision being overturned, as he didn’t believe it was a clear and obvious mistake.

This draw marked the sixth time in Premier League history that a team has avoided defeat after being 2+ goals down in a match between Everton and United, equaling the record set by Leicester City v Southampton and Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur.
