Inter Miami’s quest to secure the top spot in the Eastern Conference hit a snag as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Toronto FC at BMO Field.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Tadeo Allende rose high to head in a goal for the visitors. But Toronto fought back, with Djordje Mihailovic finding the equalizer and Sean Johnson making some incredible saves to ensure his team earned a point.
In the first 30 minutes, Inter Miami had a couple of close chances, but Johnson denied Baltasar Rodriguez and Lionel Messi with some impressive saves. Luis Suarez also had his shot stopped before Allende finally broke the deadlock with a well-timed header.
Toronto didn’t take long to respond in the second half, as Richie Laryea set up Mihailovic for the equalizing goal. The game opened up after that, with Messi trying his luck twice more but failing to beat Johnson, while Toronto’s counterattacks threatened.
Despite the attacking talent on display, Johnson’s heroics in goal helped Toronto secure a draw. The Herons had 1.47 expected goals from six shots on target, while Toronto managed just 0.65 xG from two attempts.
Toronto’s draw against Inter Miami also saw them make history as the first team in MLS to draw seven consecutive regular-season matches, surpassing records set by other teams in the past.
In the end, both sides had to settle for a point each in an entertaining clash at BMO Field.
