Benfica President Rui Costa has dismissed rumors of talks with former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho. Following his departure from Roma in February, Mourinho had been linked with a move to Benfica.
Speaking to a group of editors, Costa stated, “Every club in the world considers backup plans. Even though I have full confidence in Roger Schmidt, I always have alternative options in mind. Last year, I had plans B, C, and D.”
Costa clarified that he has never had any discussions with Mourinho. He said, “I have never spoken to Mourinho, nor have we made any approach. The last time I saw him was at Artur Jorge’s wake, and we did not discuss any specific topic. He deserves utmost respect, and he has confirmed that there were no conversations between us. My plans have always included multiple options.”
When asked about a plan M, Costa replied, “I won’t reveal the details, but Mourinho is undoubtedly an elite coach. However, my conviction has always been to retain Roger Schmidt as the best solution for Benfica. It’s not just about me, but also about ensuring stability and countering the club’s recent history of quickly replacing coaches who fail to win the national championship. This year is different, and I believe we have everything in place to succeed next season.”
In conclusion, Costa emphasized his commitment to Schmidt and the belief that he is the right man for the job. While Mourinho’s name may have been mentioned in speculation, no discussions or approaches have taken place between Benfica and the renowned coach.
