Ancelotti’s debut as Ecuador coach ends in draw against Brazil

Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as the head coach of the Brazil national team ended in a goalless draw against Ecuador, lacking in quality and scoring opportunities. This marked Ancelotti’s first game in charge of Brazil since departing Real Madrid, with the Selecao being without a manager since March following Dorival Junior’s dismissal.

The match, while helping both teams in their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, saw Brazil struggle to break down Ecuador’s solid defense. Vinicius Junior had the best chance for Brazil in the first half, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle.

Ecuador, coming off a 14-game unbeaten streak at home, almost took the lead in the second half when John Yeboah set up Nilson Angulo, who was ruled offside. Brazil had few opportunities to test Valle, with Casemiro’s long-range effort and Richarlison’s missed chance being the closest they came to scoring.

Following the draw, Ecuador remains second in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table, while Brazil sits in fourth place. Uruguay suffered a 2-0 defeat to Paraguay in a simultaneous match, causing them to drop below Brazil in the standings.

The stale performance from both teams was reflected in their low expected goals (xG) totals and lack of clear-cut chances. Despite the draw, Ecuador extended their impressive unbeaten run at home and continued their strong defensive record in World Cup qualifiers.
