Arsenal thrashes Man City 5-1, Man United loses at home in Premier League again

Manchester City and Manchester United suffered painful defeats in the Premier League on Sunday, putting a dent in their recent resurgence. City were overwhelmed by Arsenal in a 5-1 loss, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool to six points. Meanwhile, United lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at home, marking their seventh defeat in 13 league games at Old Trafford this season, a record not seen since the 1890s.

City’s hopes of winning a fifth consecutive Premier League title are now surely over, as they trail Liverpool by 15 points with only 14 matches remaining. The game against Arsenal highlighted the growing hostility between the two clubs. Despite City’s recent form, Pep Guardiola’s team still showed vulnerabilities, conceding a sloppy opener and falling apart in the second half.

Arsenal celebrated their victory, with 18-year-old defender Myles Lewis-Skelly mimicking Erling Haaland’s “Zen” celebration after scoring a goal. The home team also played Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” loudly around the stadium, perhaps in response to Haaland’s comments to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after their previous draw.

Arsenal now sits alone in second place, three points ahead of Nottingham Forest and nine points ahead of fourth-placed City.

In another blow for United, Lisandro Martinez suffered a serious knee injury during the match against Crystal Palace. This adds to the growing list of injuries plaguing the team. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored both goals for Palace in the second half, ending United’s three-match winning streak.

The future looks uncertain for United, as local striker Marcus Rashford is rumored to be leaving Old Trafford. He is reportedly undergoing a medical examination at Aston Villa ahead of a loan move with a potential permanent transfer. Without Rashford, United struggled to create chances against Palace and has now lost seven of their first 13 home games this season.

Tottenham, on the other hand, found some relief as they ended a four-match losing streak with a 2-0 win against Brentford. Vitaly Janelt’s own-goal and Pape Sarr’s goal secured the victory for Tottenham, lifting them to 13th place in the standings, just one place and two points ahead of United.

The win provides a much-needed boost for Tottenham ahead of their crucial second leg against Liverpool in the English League Cup semifinals. Tottenham currently leads 1-0 from the first leg. Manager Ange Postecoglou praised his players’ outstanding effort and physical performance.

Overall, it was a disappointing day for both Manchester clubs, but Arsenal and Tottenham found some solace in their respective victories. The Premier League continues to provide unpredictable and thrilling matches as the season progresses.
