Atletico Madrid agrees deal with Botafogo for Almada

Atletico Madrid have secured a deal with Botafogo to bring in Thiago Almada.

The Argentine midfielder had a successful loan spell at Lyon in the latter half of the 2024-25 season, after initially joining Botafogo in 2024.

Almada, who represented Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, previously made a name for himself in MLS with Atlanta United.

During his loan stint at Lyon, the 24-year-old featured in 20 matches across all competitions, starting 11 times and finding the back of the net twice. He also contributed with four assists, creating a total of 24 chances for his team.

Pending a successful medical examination, Almada will soon be donning the colors of Atletico Madrid.

The talented midfielder is poised to be Atletico’s third signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Alex Baena and Matteo Ruggeri from Villarreal and Atalanta respectively.

The deal between Atletico and Botafogo was confirmed on social media, with the Spanish club announcing the agreement and expressing excitement for Almada’s arrival.
