Chelsea’s Struggles Continue Despite Recent Win Over Wolves
Chelsea’s hopes of getting their season off to a flying start were dashed as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Blues, who had beaten Palace in their last 13 matches, failed to secure a victory at Stamford Bridge once again.
Nico Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea in the first half, but their lead didn’t last long. Just after the break, Eze scored a brilliant goal for Palace, leaving the home side unable to bounce back. Enzo Maresca’s side are still without a win at their home ground.
Maresca had faith in the squad that played against Wolves last week and decided to field the same starting eleven, with the exception of Mudryk, who was substituted at half-time. Pedro Neto took his place on the left flank and started the game impressively, along with the rest of the team.
Chelsea started creating chances early on, especially on the right side where Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke formed a promising partnership. Crystal Palace managed to hold on until the 25th minute when Nico Jackson scored a goal after a great counter-attack led by both Englishmen.
This was the second consecutive game in which Jackson found the back of the net, and he is set to extend his contract with Chelsea until 2033 in the coming days.
Despite dominating the game, Chelsea failed to capitalize on their chances and should have had a bigger lead going into halftime. Crystal Palace hardly troubled goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who had a quiet first half. Jackson himself had an opportunity to score a brace but missed a free header from the penalty spot.
The second half started with Palmer coming close to scoring from a free-kick, but Dean Henderson made a crucial save for Palace. However, it was Eze who capitalized on a loose ball outside the box and equalized for Palace in the 53rd minute, rendering Sanchez’s earlier save useless.
The equalizer seemed to wake up Crystal Palace, who generated more chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half than they did in the entire first half. Maresca reacted quickly by bringing on Joao Felix before the hour mark to try and change the game’s momentum. Eze’s goal exposed mental fragility in the Chelsea side, as they struggled to cope with adversity.
Problems continued to mount for Chelsea, and with 15 minutes remaining, Malo Gusto had to be substituted due to injury. Without Reece James, who is still suspended, Caicedo had to fill in at right back, leaving Enzo as the sole midfield reference. Despite this, Palace failed to capitalize on several clear counterattacks.
After Palmer’s early chance in the second half, Chelsea struggled to trouble Henderson again until Jackson missed a one-on-one opportunity in stoppage time. The Blues pressed hard in the final minutes but lacked creativity to break through Palace’s defensive block. As a result, Crystal Palace secured their first point of the season, ending a goal drought at Stamford Bridge that dated back to 2017.
In conclusion, Chelsea’s struggles continue as they fail to secure a win against Crystal Palace. The team showed signs of mental weakness and lacked imagination in breaking down their opponent’s defense. Maresca will need to address these issues if Chelsea hopes to turn their season around.
