Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is not happy about Florian Wirtz’s departure from the Bundesliga. Reports suggest that Liverpool has agreed to sign the German international for a whopping £100m initial fee, potentially rising to £116m with add-ons, making him their record signing.
Wirtz is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool this Friday after enjoying his post-season break. The talented midfielder played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s success over the past two seasons, helping them secure their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023-24 along with the DFB-Pokal.
Last season, Wirtz notched up an impressive 30 goal involvements in 45 appearances, with 16 goals and 14 assists to his name. His creativity on the field was evident as he created 91 chances, second only to Alex Grimaldo.
In the last two Bundesliga campaigns, Wirtz completed the most dribbles out of all players with 161 successful attempts out of 446. Despite interest from Bayern Munich, Watzke believes it would have been better for the Bundesliga if Wirtz had stayed in Germany.
“It’s a real shame that a player like Florian Wirtz is leaving the Bundesliga,” Watzke expressed his disappointment. “I wouldn’t have had a problem if he had joined Bayern Munich. That would have been beneficial for the Bundesliga.”
