Former Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall has revealed that financial constraints forced him to choose between signing Mariona Caldentey or extending Vivianne Miedema’s contract during his time at the club. Eidevall, who recently took charge of NWSL side San Diego Wave, admitted that the departure of Miedema strained his relationship with the Arsenal supporters.
Miedema, the all-time leading goalscorer in the Women’s Super League, left Arsenal in the summer and joined Manchester City as a free agent. Meanwhile, the Gunners brought in Caldentey from Barcelona.
Speaking to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Eidevall explained, “You have a limited budget to work with, and we had the opportunity to sign Caldentey or extend Miedema’s contract. Then you have to make a choice. But it’s not something you can openly discuss and say, ‘We had to choose between two players.’ The reality is that we couldn’t afford both.”
Eidevall’s decision to not renew Miedema’s contract had a negative impact on his relationship with the fans. “I think that when we didn’t renew Miedema’s contract, my relationship with the fans was hurting the team. I believed that leaving was the quickest solution for the team to regain their form,” he told Sports Illustrated.
During her seven seasons at Arsenal, Miedema scored an impressive 125 goals in 172 appearances across all competitions. Eidevall acknowledged that walking away from such a talented player was a difficult personal decision but believed it was in the best interest of the team.
“I felt there was a cloud hanging over us. If it had only affected me, I would have been fine. No worries. But if it becomes a narrative that affects the team, then the team’s performance will suffer,” Eidevall explained.
Since Eidevall’s departure, Arsenal has experienced a resurgence under interim boss Renee Slegers. The team is currently sitting in third place in the WSL table, having won 10 and drawn one of their last 11 matches.
The financial constraints faced by Eidevall at Arsenal highlight the challenges that managers often encounter when trying to balance their squad’s budget. Making tough decisions regarding player contracts is an integral part of the job, and Eidevall’s experience serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in managing a top-tier club.
