Euro 2024: Spain, Germany, France, Portugal grouped together

It’s crunch time in Germany as Euro 2024 enters the knockout phase. The group stage came to a thrilling close, setting the stage for some exciting matches in the round of 16. Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, Turkey, and Georgia secured their spots in the next round.

In a surprising turn of events, Romania claimed the top spot in Group E with a draw against Slovakia. Belgium finished second with a goalless draw that eliminated Ukraine. However, the biggest upset of the day came from Georgia, who defeated Group F winner Portugal 2-0 to secure an unexpected spot in the knockout round as one of the best third-place teams. Turkey also advanced by defeating Czechia 2-1.

With the group stage now over, we have a clearer picture of potential matchups in the tournament. The bracket is noticeably unbalanced, with five former European champions on one side. Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, and Denmark have a combined 10 tournament wins since 1960. The quarterfinals could see Germany facing Spain and Portugal taking on France in a rematch of the 2016 Euro final.

On the other side of the bracket, teams like England, Italy, and the Netherlands have a smoother path. There is a possibility of an England vs Italy rematch of the Euro 2020 final in the quarterfinals. Additionally, there are some fresh faces in the round of 16, including Slovenia and tournament debutant Georgia.

Unfortunately, Hungary and Croatia missed out on the round of 16, finishing as the bottom two third-place teams. The third-place standings show Netherlands, Georgia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia.

After a two-day break, Euro 2024 will resume with Switzerland taking on Italy and host Germany facing Denmark. England will play Slovakia followed by Spain’s match against Georgia. France and Portugal will face Belgium and Slovenia respectively. The round of 16 will conclude on July 2 with Romania playing against the Netherlands and Austria taking on Turkey.
