Fatal cluster of events leading to Diogo Jota’s death began with unlucky play

The tragic departure of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva marked the end of a series of unfortunate events that began on October 20, 2024 at Anfield.

Liverpool faced Chelsea that day, and in the 6th minute, a long ball found Diogo Jota with a clear chance to score. However, a quick intervention from Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo resulted in a foul on Jota, leaving him in pain and eventually substituted in the 30th minute.

Despite protests from Liverpool players, Adarabioyo was not sent off for the challenge. Jota was sidelined until December 13, missing six games due to the injury caused in his ribs and lung.

In an interview with ‘Record’, Jota’s physiotherapist Miguel Gonçalves explained that the base of his right lung had collapsed slightly but was now close to full recovery. Jota had a medical appointment in Liverpool to assess his condition and was not part of Liverpool’s Asian tour to focus on his recovery.

The decision to delay treatment until the end of the season was made by the 20-year-old player himself. The road to recovery for Jota will be crucial for his return to top form on the pitch.
