Al-Ettifaq boss, Steven Gerrard, has launched a scathing attack on the Aston Villa players during his time at the club.
The former England international seems to believe that he was not the problem at Villa Park.
Gerrard was given the boot when the club was dangerously close to the relegation zone, only for Unai Emery to transform them into European contenders.
Reflecting on his tenure at Villa, Gerrard told The Telegraph: “When top footballers fail to perform at their expected level, I won’t hold back. We had players who didn’t give what I believed they should have given at the time, and that’s on me.
“Villa is an incredible club. It was a fantastic opportunity at the time, and I have nothing negative to say. The owners gave me a tremendous chance.
“In the beginning, our form was top eight in the Premier League, and although many now perceive me as a failure, there was a period where we got a lot of things right. We had the team performing decently.”
