Vincent Kompany hailed Bayern Munich’s triumph in the German Super Cup against Stuttgart as “extra important” due to its association with Franz Beckenbauer.
The Bavarian giants secured a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart in the renamed Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup, with goals from Harry Kane and new signing Luis Diaz.
With this win, Bayern have now clinched the title a record 11 times, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer joining former teammate Thomas Muller as the most successful players in the competition with eight titles each.
Despite having only played three pre-season games due to their Club World Cup commitments, Kompany stressed the importance of looking ahead.
“The title is extra special because it’s the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup – that holds a special place for Bayern,” Kompany stated. “It’s always tough playing in Stuttgart, but we showed up and got the job done. We would have liked a longer pre-season, but there’s no point complaining. We’ve discussed that.
“We had the opportunity to kick off the season with a trophy. That was our objective and we’ve accomplished it. Today was a positive first step.”
