The English soccer calendar is missing its usual Boxing Day frenzy this year, with only one Premier League match on the schedule: Manchester United vs. Newcastle. Instead, fans can look forward to seven games on Saturday and two more on Sunday to complete the round of fixtures.
The Premier League cited the increasing demands of expanded European club competitions as the reason for the reduced Boxing Day schedule. With the Champions League now featuring 36 teams and more games played through January, scheduling has become more challenging for the English top flight.
The league acknowledged that the reduction in Boxing Day games has impacted an important tradition in English football. Last year, there were eight games on Boxing Day, but this year’s schedule has been spread out across Dec. 26-28 to allow for sufficient rest for players over the festive period.
Despite the limited Boxing Day games this year, the Premier League has promised more matches on Boxing Day in 2026 when it falls on a Saturday. The festive Premier League schedule includes a mix of exciting matchups over the coming days, with teams like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea all in action.
Fans can look forward to a packed schedule of games leading up to the new year, with matches scheduled through Jan. 8. From top-of-the-table clashes to relegation battles, there’s plenty of excitement in store for soccer fans this holiday season.
