Man United’s new era starts with a loss as Man City closes gap to Liverpool.

The week kicked off at Manchester United with Jim Ratcliffe finalizing his purchase of a minority stake in the club. Ratcliffe wasted no time in outlining his ambitious three-year plan to bring the Red Devils back to the pinnacle of English soccer, aiming to knock local rivals Manchester City and Liverpool “off their perch” in the process.

However, the week ended on a sour note for United as they were outplayed by Fulham in their own stadium. Despite Fulham being a team in the bottom half of the standings, they managed to secure a 2-1 victory, causing United to lose ground in the race for Champions League qualification.

This defeat not only put an end to United’s four-game winning streak in the league but also allowed fourth-place Aston Villa to widen the gap. Aston Villa’s 4-2 victory over Nottingham Forest left them with an eight-point lead over United after 26 games out of 38.

The Premier League’s qualification spots for next season’s Champions League are still uncertain, with the possibility of having either four or five places. Currently, fifth-place Tottenham is three points ahead of United and has a game in hand, making the competition for a spot even more intense.

Failing to qualify for the Champions League would be a significant blow to United’s reputation and finances. It could also spell trouble for United manager Erik ten Hag as Ratcliffe aims to raise the standards at the club.

Dave Brailsford, the sporting director of Ratcliffe-owned INEOS and now a member of United’s board, witnessed the team’s defeat from the directors’ box at Old Trafford. The deciding goal came in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Alex Iwobi scored on a counterattack, securing Fulham’s first win at Old Trafford since 2003. United had been pushing forward for a winner after Harry Maguire’s equalizer in the 89th minute.

Despite the loss, Ten Hag remains optimistic, stating, “After one defeat, you have to see the bigger picture, and the bigger picture looks very good.”

Meanwhile, Aston Villa had a successful outing, with Douglas Luiz scoring two goals and Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey also finding the net in their first home win of 2024. Villa manager Unai Emery emphasized the importance of staying in the top seven positions for now, but acknowledged that if they maintain their current position by game 33, they may start looking towards the Champions League.

In other matches, second-place Manchester City closed the gap to Liverpool in the title race to just one point with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth. Phil Foden scored the winner in the 24th minute after Erling Haaland’s shot was parried out. Arsenal, sitting in third place, will aim to follow City’s lead when they face Newcastle later on Saturday.

Everton, fighting against relegation, were denied a crucial victory as they conceded an equalizer in stoppage time to draw 1-1 against Brighton. The draw prevented Everton from moving three points clear of the bottom three and ended their eight-match winless run in the league.

Lastly, Crystal Palace got off to a strong start under newly appointed manager Oliver Glasner, securing a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Glasner will be pleased with his team’s performance as they look to climb up the table.

Overall, it was a week of mixed fortunes for the Premier League clubs, with surprises and disappointments shaping the race for European qualification and the battle against relegation.
