Ref suspends Getafe defeat at Alaves due to Greenwood chants

Alaves’ 1-0 victory over Getafe faced a temporary suspension as a result of derogatory chants directed at Mason Greenwood.

The Manchester United forward was subjected to offensive remarks from Alaves supporters, who repeatedly chanted ‘Greenwood die. Greenwood die’.

Referee Jorge Figueroa Vázquez took the decision to halt the match and activate the anti-violence protocol, which was announced through the stadium speakers at the babazorro stadium.

Figueroa Vázquez documented the incident in his match report, stating, “In the 18th minute of the game, I had to approach the field delegate to address the shouts coming from the stands, specifically ‘Greenwood, die’. It was announced over the public address system that the insults towards the player must cease, and they did not occur again.”

The suspension served as a reminder of the ongoing battle against discrimination and offensive behavior in football.
