Yves Bissouma’s Drug Use Raises Concerns about Laughing Gas in Football

Yves Bissouma, a Premier League footballer earning over £64,200 per week, has found himself in hot water after posting a video of himself consuming laughing gas (also known as nitrous oxide or hippy crack) on Snapchat. The footage, which was shared just days before the start of the season, shows the 27-year-old Tottenham midfielder inhaling the gas from a balloon during a party in London following his team’s final pre-season match against Bayern Munich.

Bissouma has since issued an apology for his actions, acknowledging his “serious lack of judgement” and expressing his understanding of the health risks involved. As a footballer and role model, he recognizes the importance of taking responsibility for his actions. However, his use of laughing gas could potentially lead to criminal charges, as possession of the substance for recreational purposes has been illegal in Britain since last year.

This incident is not the first involving a Premier League player and laughing gas addiction. In February 2024, another footballer became the first to seek rehab for his addiction to nitrous oxide. After his family reached out to his club for help, he was admitted to a medical center. According to sources, the use of laughing gas among elite players remains widespread despite its illegal status. Repeat users could face up to two years’ imprisonment.

So, what exactly is laughing gas and why is it so dangerous? Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as ‘hippy crack,’ is typically sold in canisters used to fill balloons for inhalation. While it provides a quick high, its use carries significant risks, including heart attacks, strokes, brain damage, and even death. Prolonged use can lead to depression, memory loss, hallucinations, incontinence, and nerve damage.

In the United Kingdom, nitrous oxide is classified as a Class C controlled drug, and possession by inhalation is considered a criminal offense. The consequences of using laughing gas extend far beyond the immediate high, posing serious health risks and potential legal repercussions.

It is crucial for footballers and individuals in the public eye to recognize the impact of their actions and make responsible choices. Incidents like Bissouma’s serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a positive image and setting a good example for fans and aspiring athletes.
