Former Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has launched a scathing attack on Joan Laporta following the club’s trophyless season. Font believes that Laporta must take responsibility for the team’s failures.
In an interview with Cataluyna Radio, Font criticized the decision-making process at the club, pointing out that Laporta’s former brother-in-law, who holds no official position, is involved in all major decisions. He also mentioned Deco, a friend of Laporta’s ex-brother-in-law, who lacks technical expertise despite his love for the club.
Font contrasted the current situation with Laporta’s previous tenure as president, where he knew how to delegate and had Johan Cruyff and Txiki Begiristain as advisors. According to Font, the current setup is completely different.
However, Font refrained from comparing Barcelona to their arch-rivals Real Madrid. Instead, he referred to the ex-Barca talents now working at Manchester City, such as Pep Guardiola, Begiristain, and Ferran Soriano. Font argued that if things were done right, Barcelona could compete with Real Madrid and bring back all this talent.
Font also criticized the lack of stability in the coaching structure. He claimed that a stable structure is necessary for success and highlighted a recent press conference where Laporta spoke about stability but had previously hinted that Xavi would be replaced if he wasn’t a club legend. Font questioned how any coach, even someone like Guardiola, could achieve success under such circumstances.
