Inter Milan chief Dario Baccin has revealed that the club missed out on signing two promising strikers from Argentina. Baccin confirmed that they had attempted to secure the services of Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez and Genoa’s Mateo Retegui.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Baccin acknowledged the abundance of talent in South America, stating, “It is full of interesting players, after a crisis that lasted until about two years ago, where there was less talent, potentially very very good players have returned.”
However, Baccin also highlighted the challenges of signing players from South America, citing the increased competition from English and German clubs who have the advantage of non-EU player benefits. He explained, “There are new agencies, increased number of sporting directors, this makes it much more complicated to go there and sign players at competitive prices. The English and German teams move in advance, thanks to the benefits on non-EU players. They put budgets on them that are unthinkable.”
Regarding Alvarez and Retegui, Baccin admitted that Inter Milan had been monitoring their progress. However, he emphasized that several factors need to align for a successful transfer, including the player’s fit within the squad. Baccin stated, “You mentioned two names that I won’t deny that we have followed in the past. For an operation, there are many parameters that coincide at that moment, as well as including them in the staff. We liked them but for a whole series of reasons it was not possible to take them.”
In conclusion, Inter Milan’s pursuit of Argentine talents has been met with challenges due to increased competition and complex transfer dynamics. Despite missing out on Alvarez and Retegui, the club remains committed to identifying and securing top-quality players for their squad.
