In a thrilling start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, Joshua Zirkzee emerged as the hero for Manchester United, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Fulham at Old Trafford. The young striker’s 87th-minute strike spared United’s blushes and ensured they started their campaign on a positive note.
The winning goal came after Bruno Fernandes displayed his skill by outmaneuvering his defender, setting the hosts on the attack. The ball eventually found its way to Casemiro, who played a pass to Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho’s first-time cross was met by Zirkzee, who expertly poked the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
United dominated possession in the first half, while Marco Silva’s Fulham remained disciplined and compact. However, the second half was a different story, with both teams creating numerous chances in their quest for an opening goal.
Mason Mount came close to giving United the lead when Marcus Rashford provided a cross from the left wing. Unfortunately, Mount’s shot was blocked by an inspired Leno. Kobe Mainoo also had an opportunity to score but narrowly missed the target. Additionally, a dangerous cross from Garnacho almost resulted in another goal, but it eluded any finishing touch.
Zirkzee’s late winner ultimately sealed the victory for United. Rashford had a chance to double their lead but slipped as he went to shoot with an open goal in front of him.
Fulham had their fair share of opportunities as well. They looked dangerous from corners and should have taken the lead when Rodrigo Muniz found himself with only Harry Maguire to beat. However, Muniz’s pass went straight to Maguire’s feet.
Despite the loss, Fulham can take pride in their performance and draw encouragement for the remaining matches of the season.
