West Ham manager David Moyes has admitted that his team put in a poor performance during their 5-0 defeat against Chelsea. Moyes acknowledged that the Hammers lacked mental toughness, which ultimately led to their heavy loss.
Reflecting on the match, Moyes said, “It was a difficult afternoon, and unfortunately, we’ve had too many difficult afternoons in the second half of the season. We seemed to lack mental toughness and leadership on the pitch, which is disappointing.”
Moyes also addressed the criticism he faces as the manager, stating, “As the manager, I am always the one who gets questioned in these situations. However, it’s important to remember that this is the same team that played against Liverpool last week and managed a 2-2 draw.”
He further explained, “We needed to approach this game similarly to last week, but our defensive and midfield performances were abysmal today, making it incredibly challenging. People want us to field our best players, and we are trying to do that, but it exposes other areas of the pitch.”
Moyes also highlighted potential issues with the team’s organization and player suitability within a strict structure. He stated, “In the past three years, we have had a strict structure that has brought us success and European football. However, today our structure was poor, players were out of position, and they failed to fulfill their roles effectively.”
Acknowledging the impact of a congested fixture schedule, Moyes mentioned, “We have played significantly more games than some other teams this season, which does take a toll. However, we had an entire week to prepare for this match.”
Moyes also admitted that his previous claims about the difficulties of playing on Thursdays and Sundays were not supported by their performance against Chelsea. He remarked, “Chelsea played Tottenham midweek and still performed exceptionally well today. They are in a good moment. They started the season poorly but have picked up, while we started well and now find ourselves in a poor run in the second half of the season.”
In conclusion, West Ham’s defeat against Chelsea highlighted their lack of mental toughness and poor organization on the pitch. Moyes acknowledged the team’s struggles and emphasized the need for improvement in the remaining matches of the season.
