USMNT star faces criticism for joining relegation-threatened Premier League team

In the early stages of his professional soccer career, Giovanni Reyna, midfielder for the United States men’s national team, has found himself embroiled in controversy and facing criticism. A disagreement between Reyna and USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter resulted in Berhalter’s dismissal after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, although he was later re-appointed. However, there are still doubts about how Reyna will be utilized in important international matches.

Reyna has also come under scrutiny for his club career. Despite being considered one of Europe’s top prospects when he broke into Borussia Dortmund’s first team, an injury limited his playing time this season. As a result, he made a loan move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest. This decision has been questioned by a former USMNT star, who is concerned about Reyna’s future.

Taylor Twellman, a former USMNT forward, expressed his reservations about Reyna’s transfer to Nottingham Forest during an interview on Alexi Lalas’ “State of the Union” podcast. Twellman believes that Reyna should be playing at a higher level and that the English league is not the best place for him to showcase his talent.

According to Twellman, “La Liga suits Giovanni Reyna. A relegation battle in the English Premier League does not suit Giovanni Reyna. I don’t care who you are and who’s trying to convince me on that — that’s not going to work.”

Reyna is now represented by Portuguese superagent Jorge Mendes, who is highly influential in the world of soccer. Mendes played a role in securing Reyna’s move to Forest after his playing time became limited at Dortmund. However, Twellman believes that these challenging times will determine Reyna’s true potential and that he may not find the answers he seeks at Forest.

Twellman also cast doubt on whether Reyna will continue to be a key player in the United States’ plans, especially if he fails to stand out in the Premier League. While the issues with Berhalter seem to be resolved, Reyna needs consistent playing time to regain full fitness and be in the best shape for this summer’s Copa America.

So far, Reyna has made two substitute appearances for Forest, totaling just 31 minutes. The team currently sits in 16th place in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone. Twellman believes that this situation will not benefit Reyna or the country that is relying on him.

“I think we are going to have the same conversation — where is Gio going to end up, what’s his best team, can he play in a system that doesn’t suit a 10, someone that is going to contribute on both sides? I think we are going to be having this conversation in four months, unfortunately, but I hope I’m wrong,” Twellman said.

In conclusion, Giovanni Reyna’s career has been filled with controversy and criticism. His move to Nottingham Forest has raised questions about his future, and doubts have been cast on his role in the USMNT’s plans. Only time will tell how Reyna’s career will unfold and whether he can reach his full potential.
