PSG 0-1 Liverpool: Ligue 1 champions’ costly missed chances

Liverpool managed to secure a narrow advantage in their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, despite being thoroughly outplayed in the first leg at the Parc des Princes. The only goal of the game came from substitute Harvey Elliott just 40 seconds after his introduction for Mohamed Salah.

PSG had the luxury of a fully fit squad, with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal and Marquinhos and Willian Pacho as the centre-backs. Liverpool, on the other hand, had a few injury concerns, with Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Tyler Morton, and Amara Nallo all unavailable.

The game was heavily dominated by PSG in the first half, with Liverpool struggling to keep possession and launch counterattacks. PSG had numerous chances to take the lead, including a disallowed goal from Kvaratskhelia and a brilliant save from Alisson to deny Barcola.

PSG controlled the midfield and tormented Liverpool’s defensive flanks, but neither team managed to find the back of the net in the first half.

In the second half, Liverpool showed more resilience and started to threaten PSG’s goal through quick transitions. However, they still struggled to create clear-cut chances, and PSG regained control of the game.

Despite PSG’s dominance, it was Liverpool who found the breakthrough in the 87th minute. Substitute Elliott received a pass from Darwin Nunez, held off pressure, and slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his first touch.

Liverpool will be pleased to take a lead back to Anfield for the rematch, but they know they can’t rely on luck again. PSG will be looking to improve their finishing and outplay the Premier League leaders in front of their own supporters.

Both teams have work to do before the second leg, and fans are eagerly anticipating PSG’s visit to Merseyside.
